Every image, font and stylesheet on this site was made by a person. Here is who, and where each one came from.

Window chrome and typeface

• 98.css by Jordan Scales - the Windows 98 window frames, buttons, title bars, progress bar and sunken panels. Licensed MIT. Source on GitHub.
• Pixelated MS Sans Serif - the interface font, bundled with 98.css. It is a web conversion of Microsoft's MS Sans Serif bitmap typeface; the original type design is Microsoft's, not open source, and is used here only to reproduce the period interface.

Animated GIFs

These were drawn by anonymous GeoCities users in the late 1990s and early 2000s. GeoCities was shut down in 2009; the Internet Archive rescued the images and made them searchable through GifCities. Each one below links to the archived page it was found on, so the original author's site is one click away. The individual artists are, in almost every case, unknown and uncredited - that is a loss, and the link is the closest thing to a signature that survives.

Software used on the desktop

• v86 by Fabian Hemmer - the x86 PC emulator behind the Virtual Machine window. Licensed BSD-2-Clause. It emulates hardware only and ships no operating system.
• SeaBIOS and the VGA BIOS, the firmware the emulated machine boots from, as distributed with v86.
• Bootable images from copy/images: FreeDOS (GPL), KolibriOS (GPL), and a small Linux.
• The Internet window shows real pages from the Wayback Machine, framed as they were archived in 1999.

Everything else

• Hosting, database and files run on Cloudflare Workers with D1.
• The page layout, stylesheets and JavaScript were written by Claude, an AI made by Anthropic.
